Hi, we are the Kniffins and we live in Seattle.
We started this blog as a way to keep up- people who live far away (and, really, even those who live close by) often miss out on important events, big transitions, or little stories that happen along the way. This journal is an attempt to record those events. It’s the stories we would be telling you if we were in regular contact. So we hope this “keeps you up” with us, and reminds you that we’d like to “keep up” with you. 🙂
Everyone has a family, so why publicly write about ours? Because they’re public- stuff we’d likely be telling you anyways, if you were around and we were on the phone or sharing a drink. And, because… it’s important. Just because there are a lot of families out there doesn’t make it less so.
Family is pretty special. It’s one of life’s ultimate adventures.. Like all things worth doing, it requires everything (and more) that you’ve got, and gives back way more. Love, joy, relationship, drama, tension, disagreement, visions, dreams, heartache… they are all there aplenty in family.
From a spiritual point of view, the Family is a special unit in which forms us more deeply than anything else. Our personality, conscience, and connection to Him. Our idea of God is greatly influenced by our parents. Our ideas about fairness, right/wrong, what the problems are and what the solution is all are borne out of the fertile ground of Family dynamics.
Finally, the Family is a spiritual unit. The Bible describes it as the fundamental unit from which a Christian learns about community and God’s Presence within it. The Puritans call the Family the “Church within the Church”. Everything the church does- discipleship, edifcation, service, learning of spiritual gifts… all happens in the family. Dr.Rob Rienow says, “The top priority of the Christian life… is to serve, minister to, and make disciples of our own children and family members… to sit down to read the Scriptures at home with their own children.” We learn everything we know about the Christian life within the framework of the Family.
All of this makes for pretty good stories, and that’s all that this blog is about. We’re the Seattle Kniffins and we, from time to time, update this journal to let you know about what we’re up to. Everything included here are just public stories that we would tell to anyone who wanted to listen. But, it’s also a good way to stay connected to friends and other Family who we don’t get a chance to see as often as we’d like (which is pretty much all of them :)). Thanks for stopping by, and welcome.
